AHNS 2010 ANNUAL MEETING

The American Head and Neck Society invites you and your colleagues to participate in its 2010 Annual Meeting. Held during the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (COSM), this two-day meeting will present the best scientific findings related to head and neck cancer treatment from a clinical and research perspective.
All authors who wish to present papers for the AHNS 2010 Annual Meeting may submit online starting SEPTEMBER 14, 2009. Abstracts may be selected for either oral or poster presentations. Accepted abstracts will be published in the onsite Final Program.
All authors are invited to compete for one of the following AHNS sponsored awards:
- Robert Maxwell Byers Award in the amount of $1,000 US for the best clinical research paper submitted to the meeting. All accepted oral presenters may compete for this award.
- Best Resident Basic Science Research Paper in the amount of $500 US. Only residents in training can compete for this award and must attest that he/she performed at least 80% of the work.
- Best Resident Clinical Paper in the amount of $500 US. Only residents in training can compete for this award and must attest that he/she performed at least 80% of the work.
- Best Prevention and Early Detection Papers in the amount of $500 US for first place and $250 for second place. All accepted oral presenters may compete for this award.
Authors who wish to compete for an award must submit a completed manuscript to the Chair of the Awards Committee by March 5, 2010 to be eligible. All submitted manuscripts are eligible for these awards. All authors who intend to submit a manuscript for competition must notify the AHNS of their intent at the time of their abstract submission by checking off the award they wish to compete for.
Only previously unpublished manuscripts will be considered for awards.
Oral presentations will be presented throughout the main scientific session and video may be incorporated into their podium presentations. Accepted poster presentations will be presented during the Poster Tours on the night of Thursday, April 29th. Moderators will lead groups of attendees through a select group of posters, divided by topic, and authors will present their findings to the tour. All authors will be notified of their acceptance status in mid-January 2010. Further submission details concerning word length, charts/tables and other formatting instructions will be made available on the AHNS website.
All accepted oral presentations are required to submit a manuscript to the AHNS journal, The Archives of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery. Papers must be submitted by 5 pm Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 and must be submitted electronically to the journal’s website. Please note that this deadline precedes the start of the meeting by several weeks.
All papers must be complete submissions according to the Journal Instructions for Authors. Instructions are available on the web site. Papers not following the Journal instructions will be returned and not considered submitted. The AHNS Publications Committee will review all papers submitted by March 31, 2010 in an expedited fashion with the goal of publishing the papers from the meeting in an AHNS issue dedicated for the meeting proceedings.
This Policy is firmly enforced and will take effect immediately.
Authors may request a waiver from submitting a manuscript to the Archives of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery, but all requests must be submitted no later than January 30, 2010 in writing to the AHNS Publications Committee via email (abstracts@ahns.info), fax (310) 437-0585 or mail 11300 W. Olympic Blvd Suite 600, Los Angeles, CA 90064. Please include your name, abstract reference number, and reason for requesting the waiver. All decisions regarding waivers will be made by the Publications Committee; authors whose requests are declined will need to withdraw their submissions by January 30, 2010 if they do not plan to submit a manuscript to the Archives.

COSM POLICY STATEMENT
COSM Secretaries Liaison Committee formally adopted the following policy for all COSM meetings in October, 1993:
The material in this abstract has not been submitted for publication, published, nor presented previously at another national or international meeting and is not under consideration for presentation at another national or international meeting. The penalty for duplicate presentations/publication is prohibition of the author from presenting at a COSM Society meeting for a period of three years.

AHNS 2010 MANUSCRIPT POLICY
By accepting our invitation to present an oral paper, you are agreeing to submit a complete manuscript to the AHNS official journal, Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, for consideration. Papers must be submitted by 5 pm Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Please note that this deadline is earlier than in the past, and that this deadline precedes the meeting by several weeks. Thus earlier deadline permits expedited review and publication of a special issue in the Archives.
Manuscripts must be submitted electronically to the Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery via the following website:

- If the individual is already registered, he/she just needs to log in.
- If the individual is not yet registered, he/she will need to click on the link entitled “ First-time user? Please register for an account”, which is found on the bottom left side of the page.

Helpful submission hints for an original article:
- The article file should be submitted in a Word format.
- The article file should include a title page with word count, abstract, manuscript text, references, figure legends and tables in this exact order. The word count is for text only, exclusive of title, abstract, references, figure legends and tables.
- Tables need to go into the article file in the correct order and not be submitted separately. Table creation instructions may be found at http://archotol.ama-assn.org/misc/tablecreationinst.pdf.
- Each figure/image should be submitted in a separate file, in a TIF or JPG format.
